Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher, attributed to J.P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, very large ovoid pitcher with tooled shoulder and thin rounded rim, profusely decorated with large flowering vine designs around the body, featuring circular blossoms. Collar heavily decorated with circular blossoms and swags, along with dashes flanking the spout, and a wavy stripe along the front of the spout. One of the largest and most finely-decorated pitchers known by this important James River Basin potter. Provenance: From a North Carolina collection. Purchased in VA approximately fifteen years ago. Restored handle. Restoration to collar and restoration over much of surface, including touch-up to much of decoration. H 14 1/2".
