Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Phenomenal Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with rounded and tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied handle, decorated with a very large triple-stemmed cobalt tulip plant. Design includes an impressive central tulip with heavily-shaded petals, dotted border, and curved stamens, flanked by two smaller blossoms extending from stems with numerous leaves. Unusual dashed dottted highlights to leaves on right side. Likely one of the finest Norton floral designs known. 1" stone ping and smaller chip to spout. Salt drip below spout. Second salt drip to front. Two small stone pings to reverse. 2 1/4" contact mark on reverse. A minor flake or contact mark to right side of front. H 17 1/2".
