Extremely Rare and Fine Morgantown School Redware Jar, Stamped "WM W BURCHNELL / LONDON," Madison County, OH origin, circa 1835, finely-potted ovoid jar with rounded foot, tooled shoulder and flaring rounded rim, the surface covered in an exceptional celadon glaze over a salmon-colored ground. This glaze treatment is highly unusual for Midwestern redware. William Burchnell was evidently trained in Morgantown, Virginia (now West Virginia), and joined fellow Morgantown potter, James M. Thompson, Jr., in London, Ohio by 1830, establishing a pottery on the site of the town's Presbyterian Church. This jar is only the second example of signed Burchnell redware we have seen. (The other piece is a cylindrical jar, which sold at Crocker Farm, Inc.'s July 11, 2009 auction.) Both examples suggest Burchnell was a skilled potter with an interest in making colorfully-glazed household ware. Heavy chipping to base. Light wear to rim. Glazed surface surviving in remarkable condition. H 10".
