Very Rare Diminutive Scroddled Redware Jar with Copper Slip Decoration, Strasburg, VA origin, circa 1890, small-sized ovoid jar with rounded foot and rim, decorated with splashed copper glaze over an unusual scroddled surface of light orange, dark orange, and white clay. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. The swirled clay on this is very unusual in the work of Shenandoah Valley potters. Unlike most examples of Strasburg redware from the period, this jar was not covered with a slip wash before the copper was applied. Excellent color. Broken and reglued. Shallow 1 1/4" flake to top of rim, probably an in-the-firing flaw caused by contact with a piece of kiln furniture or another piece of pottery. H 3 1/4" ; Diameter 4".
