Outstanding and Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Fish Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed fish, possibly a trout, featuring jagged fins and a heavily-spotted body, underscored by two leafy stems. Slip-trailed "3" with flourishes at shoulder. Excellent and highly desirable figural design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Maine collection assembled during the 1980s. 3 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line on reverse, which does not appear to extend through to interior. Some staining to surface. H 11 1/8".
