Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Bird on Branch, Dated 1876, Stamped "J. FISHER & Co. / LYONS, N.Y.," semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flaring rim, and lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed bird with crest, spotted body, and dashed tail, perched on a leafy branch. The date "1876" is slip-trailed beneath. Slip-trailed "6." above decoration. Excellent design. Decorations of this quality are rare among the products of J. Fisher. Provenance: Included in the publication, "Clay in the Hands of the Potter," by the Rochester Museum and Science Center, 1974. Reglued 3 3/4" x 2 3/4" wedge at rim, with additional chip at rim. This damage connects to a 10 1/2" crack extending downward from rim. 2 1/2" x 3/4" rim chip on reverse. 3 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Rim secured with a wire. Glazed-over 1 1/4" handle chip. 5 1/2" inverted Y-shaped hairline on side of churn. Some fry to cobalt. H 19 3/8".
