Exceptional Glazed Redware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "L. JOHNSON," Lorenzo Johnson, Newstead, Erie County, NY, circa 1850, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and applied handle, decorated with a finely-brushed cobalt flower applied over a celadon glaze. The rare glazing on this jug was designed to make the piece resemble cobalt-decorated, salt-glazed stoneware of the period. The creamy greenish background with pale orange spotting and overlying blue decoration creates a colorful and visually-appealing example of NY State redware. This jug is the finest example of Lorenzo Johnson’s work known among several signed and attributed pieces, and must surely rank among the most beautiful New York State redware items to have surfaced. It has a long exhibition and publication history. Excellent condition with minor spout nicks and a small stone ping near base. H 12".
