Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Christmas Tree Decoration, Midwestern origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and thin rim, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a Christmas tree with potted base and branches capped with star-shaped embellishments. One handle applied at shoulder. There is a brushed cobalt arch where opposite handle was never applied. Impressed "4" on one side; reverse with a brushed cobalt "4" underscored by dashes. Pictured in an issue of "Spinning Wheel" magazine during the 1970's. 1 3/4" shallow chip on interior of rim. Small chip on exterior of rim. Two shallow base chips. Chipping to handle. H 14 1/2".
