Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Clamshell Decoration, Stamped "WARNE & LETT's 1807 / LIBERTY FOREV / S. AMBOY N. JERSY," ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted "clamshell" and tassel design. Shoulder with impressed Warne & Letts maker’s mark, including the desirable slogan "LIBERTY FOREV" within a serrated border. A fine example of early NJ stoneware. Provenance: Laurence Fish Estate, Trenton, NJ. Dryness to surface. Stone ping on front. Two recessed contact marks (essentially chips) on the side, which occurred in the firing and measure 3/4" and 3/8". 5" dry contact mark on reverse. Chipping to a section of the spout. A few small base chips, as well as a smooth 2" chipped section on the reverse. The 2" chipped area is possibly an in-the-firing flaw, caused when the jug adhered to kiln furniture or part of another pot. H 14 1/4".
