Exceptional Large-Sized Redware Vase with Applied Floral Decoration, PA or VA origin, possibly Shenandoah Valley, mid to late 19th century, with ovoid body, rounded foot, and tall neck culminating in a flared rim, the front decorated with an elaborate applied clay decoration of roses blossoming from a curved stem with leaves. Applied decoration is painted green, yellow, and light brown. Redware pieces with applied decoration were produced by several potters in the Shenandoah Valley, including Anthony Bacher of Winchester, VA and Thurmont, MD, John George Schweinfurt of New Market, VA, and by the daughter of John Bell, Mary Elizabeth Bell, of Waynesboro, PA. Excellent form and decoration. An unusually large-sized piece. Losses to applied decoration. Decoration was painted some time after the damage occurred. Rim chip. H 14 3/4".
