Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Cobalt K, attributed to J.P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1825, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flaring rim, and arching tab handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt flower on the front and back. Brushed with cobalt "K" under one handle and a 4 under the opposite handle. Exfoliation to much of surface. Rim sagged during the firing. Dry recessed contact mark on side of jar, measuring 5". 4" spidering crack on underside, extending 6 1/4" up side of jar from base. Chip to interior of rim. A few base chips. H 15".
