Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Large Cobalt Tulip Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va," circa 1870, low-walled cylindrical crock with thin semi-rounded rim and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and back with two large brushed cobalt tulips. Cobalt dashes brushed under each handle. Impressed with Solomon Bell mark and four-gallon capacity mark under one handle. Exceptional size. One of the finest Solomon Bell cake crocks we have seen. Provenance: Descended in the family of Betty Cooley, wife of potter, Richard Franklin "Polk" Bell. Excellent condition with a few rim chips. H 9 3/4" ; Diameter 12 3/4".
