Outstanding Large-Sized Stoneware Jar with Open Handles and Elaborate Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, possibly Remmey or Crolius Family, late 18th or early 19th century, approximately five-gallon ovoid jar with tall collar and open loop handles, decorated on the front and back with a large incised flower with fanning petals and large leaves. Incised work filled with bright cobalt slip. An exceptional jar in terms of decoration and size. Wide spidering cracks in underside, which become thinner and extend partway up wall of jar. Several base chips. Hairlines to section of rim. Contact mark and stone ping to one side. NEW INFORMATION ON CONDITION: ONE HANDLE RESTORED. H 15".
