Early Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, James River Basin, VA, circa 1820, highly ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, thin rim, and handles in the form of large, flattened tabs. Front and back decorated with a stylized cobalt foliate design. Tops of handles brushed over completely with cobalt. Excellent form. Provenance: From a thirty-year Virginia collection. 1 1/2" loss to one handle. Numerous cracks extending up from base, including a circular crack completely around base, indicating the base may have been reglued. Two rim chips. H 11 3/4".
