Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tree of Life Decoration, Inscribed in Cobalt "H. Lowndes / Manufactor / Petersburg / Va," circa 1840, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and arching lug handle decorated with the slip-trailed signature "H. Lowndes / Manufactor / Petersburg / Va." Reverse decorated with a cobalt "tree of life" design, having brushed leaves and flowers sprouting from a slip-trailed stem. Exceptionally bold, dark decoration on this jar, contrasting nicely with a steel gray background. A fine example of Virginia stoneware. Provenance: From a consignor in North Carolina. 1 1/4" hairline on underside, extending 5" up base of jar. Otherwise mint condition. H 11 3/4".
