Rare Four-Gallon Philadelphia Stoneware Advertising Jug with Large Cobalt Tree Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1835, ovoid jug with ribbed handle, decorated with a large, artistically-rendered tree design. Shoulder impressed with the merchant's advertising "GEO D WETHERILL / NO 56 NORTH FRONT ST / PHILADELPHIA". George D. Wetherill was a long-time Philadelphia druggist. A fine example of early Pennsylvania advertising stoneware. Long thin spidering crack at base. In-the-firing contact mark on left side. 1 1/8" spout chip, which likely occurred in the firing. H 17 6/8".
