Large-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Incised "X," attributed to Dave the Slave, Lewis Miles Stoney Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, approximately six-gallon ovoid jar with thin rounded rim and large, applied tab handles. Surface covered in a streaky green alkaline glaze. Incised "X" on shoulder. Provenance: Charlton Hall Galleries, West Columbia, SC. Includes letter of authenticity. Hairlines throughout much of surface, including some on underside. 5 1/4" hairline from rim, along with two other much shorter hairlines from rim. Small handle chip. H 15 1/4".
