Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Incised Horseshoe and Five Dots, attributed to Dave the Slave, Lewis Miles Stoney Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield, SC, circa 1855, large-sized ovoid jar with flaring rounded rim, and arching tab handles, covered in a brown alkaline glaze. Shoulder incised with a distinctive horseshoe mark associated with the slave potter, David Drake, surrounded by five incised dots. A good example of Edgefield stoneware. Includes letter of authenticity signed by Pete Wingard. 1 1/4" handle chip. Some spots where glaze did not cover on front. Small stone ping on front. H 14 1/2".
