Scarce Stoneware Barrel Mug, Stamped "DOLGEVILLE / TURNVEREIN / S 11," White's Utica, late 19th century, barrel-form mug with molded handle and cobalt-highlighted bands. This mug was made to commemorate a gymnastics club in Dolgeville, NY. ("Turnverein" was the German gymnastics movement.) A gymnastics festival was held in Dolgeville in 1894, and a signed White's Utica example of different form is known bearing this date. This mug, though not dated, may have been made celebrating the same event, hailed as the 25th turnfest of the New York Turn-Bezirk. 1/2" spout chip along with a smaller spout chip. Small contact mark on top of handle. H 4".
