Rare Redware Bird-on-Stump Match or Pipe Holder, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, figure of a bird perched between two hollowed stumps designed to serve as match or pipe holders. Hand-modeled bird incised with numerous scale-like feather strokes, its eyes produced from impressed circles, and tail impressed with larger circles. Stumps heavily-incised to simulate tree bark. Base embellished with impressed circles. Surface covered in a lead glaze. Impressed "10" on underside. Highly unusual form with profuse incised detail. Restoration to portion of beak and tail. Wear to base, including base chips and a 1" shallow base flake visible primarily on underside. Wear to glaze on much of surface, which appears to have been intentionally darkened. H 3 7/8" ; Diameter (of base) 3 1/2".
