Very Rare Glazed Redware Figure of Bear with Stump, Pennsylvania origin, third quarter 19th century, hand-modeled figure of a standing bear on a circular base, its outstretched arms clutching a narrow tree stump or club. Surface of bear with heavily-incised fur, the figure's face embellished with incised teeth and impressed oval eyes with circular pupils. Base of stump with incised bark. Figure rattles when shaken. Border of base with impressed flower heads and center of base with a larger impressed flower head. Surface covered in a mottled lead and manganese glaze. Outstanding form. Much of one arm restored. Two small base chips. Small chip to one ear. Nick on side of nose and opposite ear. A few very minor flecks of glaze loss to body. H 5".
