Very Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Bird-on-Stump Whistle, probably PA origin, early to mid 19th century, wheel-thrown, conical stump surmounted by a hand-modeled whistle in the form of a bird. Stump is accented with raised bark-like surface and applied knots with cream-colored slip and sponged manganese highlights. Bird heavily-decorated with cream-colored slip spots and sponged manganese. Surface covered in a lead glaze. Exceptional form with strong decoration. Shallow 2" base flake, which appears to have occurred in the firing. Wear to tip of beak. Wear to corners of tail. H 6 1/2" ; Length (of bird) 4 1/2".
