Extremely Rare Redware Bank in the Form of a Chick, Dated April 4, 1861, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, hand-modeled bank in the form of a chick with small crest, impressed circular eyes, and incised detail wings and tail. Chick is incised with date "April 4 / 1861" below its tail, and is seated atop a wheel-thrown circular base with applied and incised clovers and a crawling worm. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Wonderful subject. This bank is the only redware example in the form of a baby chicken that we are aware of. Provenance: Christie's Sale of the Seamen's Bank Collection, March 13, 1991. Excellent condition with light wear to tail and wear to applied decoration at base. H 4 1/4" ; Diameter (of base) 5".
