Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "HENDERSON & RUDD / WATERTOWN," New York State origin, circa 1867-1868, approximately one-gallon, squat-shaped jug, decorated with a brushed cobalt drooping tulip design. The very rare maker's mark of John H. Henderson and Harrison N. and Wilbur F. Rudd is impressed into the shoulder and brushed over in cobalt. Henderson was born in 1811 in Champion, NY and is listed as a potter in the Watertown, NY business directories from 1855 to 1867-1868. Harrison Nathaniel Rudd and Wilbur F. Rudd were also born in Champion, NY in 1840 and 1841 respectively, and are listed as brickmakers in the 1860 U.S. Census of Watertown, NY. Both Rudds served in Company A, 10th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment from August 17, 1862 until June 23, 1865. The mark on this jug represents a brief partnership between Henderson and the brothers Rudd, which probably lasted from 1867 to 1868. Some base chips, most, if not all, of which appear to be in-the-making. 1/2" contact mark on right side of jug. H 11 1/8".
