Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Cake Crock, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL / STRASBURG / Va," circa 1870, cylindrical corck with tooled shoulder and heavily-ribbed lug handles, decorated on both sides with a hanging cobalt flower flanked by bat wing shaped swags, applied over slip-washed clay. Impressed with Solomon Bell maker's mark under one handle. Strong decoration. Unusual form for this maker. Vertical crack from rim on one side, continuing to underside where it forms a thin Y-shaped line, and then continuing up opposite side 4 1/2" as a thin line. Small rim chip or stone ping. Contact mark to one handle. Two small chips to opposite handle. H 8 1/2" ; Diameter 9 1/4".
