Rare Glazed Redware Lidded Sugar Bowl with Bird Finial, attributed to James C. Mackely, Mechanicstown (now Thurmont), MD, circa 1875, bulbous sugar bowl with rounded foot, tooled collar, and open loop handles. Decorated on both sides with applied flower blossoms connected by an incised stem with leaves. Lid decorated with a large hand-modeled and incised bird with head above an unusually large, heavily-incised flower blossom. Surface decorated with daubs of manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Provenance: William Kelly Young Collection. Christie's Sale 8116, June 3, 1995. Bird missing beak. Tail reglued. Rim chip and light wear to rim. Light wear to applied floral decoration on bowl. Minor base wear to bowl. H (including lid) 6 3/8".
