Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Cobalt Rose Decoration, Stenciled "GEO. J. BLACK / MEYERSDALE / PA," circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled rose with branch, stenciled "3" surrounded by a wreath, and the maker's stenciling "GEO. J. BLACK / MEYERSDALE / PA," applied over slip-coated clay. The "GEO. J. BLACK" stenciled on this crock is the same George Black who operated a pottery with his brother, Albert, in Somerfield, PA, circa 1860 to 1872 (Schaltenbrand, p. 106). Mint condition. H 11 1/4".
