Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled midsection, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with intricate brushed cobalt vining between thick cobalt stripes. This design is underscored by a large number "3" flanked by cobalt dashes. A fine example of Western PA freehand decoration. Near mint, essentially as-made, condition. In-the-firing contact mark on shoulder. In-the-firing chip to rim on reverse, connected to a very minor chip, which probably occurred after the firing. Thin 4 3/4" salt drip on reverse. H 15".
