Scarce Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock, attributed to D.G. Thompson, Morgantown, WVA, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with ribbed lug handles, rounded rim, and heavy circumferential tooling, decorated with a brushed cobalt vine design flanked by two cobalt stripes. This design is underscored by a script cobalt 3 flanked by vertical and horizontal cobalt leaves. Additional brushed cobalt stripe at base. A fine example by this ever-popular West Virginia maker. Excellent condition. Chipping to interior of rim. Light surface wear or possibly in-the-firing touch marks to ends of one handle. Small in-the-firing touch mark under same handle. H 13 1/2".
