Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, possibly Corlears Hook, circa 1800, ovoid jar with applied loop handles, embellished with a tooled foot and shoulder. Decorated on the front and back with an elaborate, skillfully-incised and cobalt-filled floral decoration. The designs on each side are slightly different, with one side featuring a large blossom with curving petals, and the opposite side featuring a blossom with several overlapping petals in a grape cluster or fish scale manner. Additional cobalt drape and tassel decorations are brushed under each handle. Excellent form and outstanding decoration. This jar was last purchased in the 1930's for 50 cents. Several rim and base chips. Crazing to surface and thin cracks extending up from base. Flaking to interior and underside. H 11 1/2".
