Glazed Redware Dog Bank with Applied Coleslaw Decoration, George Wagner, Carbon Co., PA, circa 1860, molded bank in the form of a seated spaniel having incised detail to face and paws, embellished with applied clay coleslaw mane and tail tip. Decorated with attractive streaked green and brown glazes over a yellowish ground, the entire surface covered in a lead glaze. Eyes, nostrils, and mouth painted white, black, and red, at some point after the firing. Carved coin slot in underside. Wear to coleslaw mane with a larger damaged area to mane on reverse. Damage to slot on underside to allow money to be removed. Applied wad of clay to right side of mane appears to be in-the-making. H 6 3/4".
