Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Pheasant Decoration and Boston Advertising, attributed to J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1860, straight-sided jug with squared spout and ribbed handle, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a pheasant with turned head, long tail and spotted side, perched on a tree stump, surrounded by shrubs. Jug is impressed with advertising for Boston, MA wine and liquor dealer, Leonard W. Porter: "L W PORTER / 27 NORTH MARKET ST: / BOSTON." Pheasant design is characteristic of the J. & E. Norton Pottery of Bennington, VT. Excellent decoration and color. Mint condition. H 13 1/2".
