Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, James River Basin, VA, second quarter 19th century, attributed to John Poole Schermerhorn, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and back with a brushed cobalt scallop-edged circle resembling a flower head, surrounding the number 4. Leaf-like cobalt brushwork extends from this design to the left and right. Bold decoration with good color. Impressive large size. In-the-firing touch mark on one side. In-the-firing separation lines at ends of handles. 9" vertical line extending up from base, which does not appear to go through to interior. A few short lines in rim. Faint, in-the-firing crazing at base. Small base chip. H 15 1/2".
