Rare Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, attributed to the Morgan-van Wickle Pottery, Herbertsville (Old Bridge), NJ, early 19th century, highly ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles. Decorated with an incised and cobalt-filled design of bird with turned head perched on a leaf. Incised feather detail to wing and tail. Form and incised bird design are consistent with stoneware produced at the Morgan-van Wickle Pottery of Herbertsville (now Old Bridge), New Jersey. Excellent form and decoration. Recently found in a NJ home. Horizontal 8" hairline on reverse. Small rim chips. Faint 2" line on front. H 13 3/4".
