Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1865, straight-sided crock with rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a bird with long bill and spotted breast, perched on a leaf. 2 1/8" X-shaped line under one handle, which is in surface only near base. 5" vertical line on front, which is in surface only. One small handle chip. 2 1/2" in-the-making base flake. 1 1/4" base chip, probably in-the-making. Small base chip on reverse with 1 3/4" vertical line extending upward from it. This line also continues 1 1/4" onto underside. Spots of fry to cobalt. Some surface staining. H 11".
