Exceptional Ovoid Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANN / ALEXA," circa 1820, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with an extremely rare zig-zagging design of brushed cobalt leaves and circular flower heads. Reverse decorated with three stylized flowers at the shoulder. Additional cobalt brushed at the handle terminals. Impressed with very rare John Swann maker's mark on the front shoulder of the jar. Only a small number of cobalt-decorated stoneware items by Swann are known, this being one of the more heavily-decorated examples. Provenance: Recently discovered in Georgia. Hairline in underside. Base chip. Faint 2" Y-shaped line on reverse, which likely occurred in the firing and does not go through to interior. H 10 1/4".
