Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," circa 1850, ovoid jar with squared rim, tooled shoulder, and large tab handles, slip-cup-decorated completely around with two zig-zagging cobalt lines. Front additionally decorated with cobalt chainlinks and tulips. Reverse decorated with chainlinks. Additional cobalt wavy line designs under each handle. Excellent decoration, color, and size. Decorated Milburn stoneware jars of this size are rare, especially when slip-trailed. 2 1/4" chip off one handle. Y-shaped crack on underside, extending up side of jar under one handle. Shallow base chip. Two minor rim chips and small chips to shoulder molding. Faint horizontal hairline at base. 3/4" piece of kiln furniture attached to side of jar near base. H 15 1/4".
