Rare Glazed Redware Wallpocket with Applied Bird and Floral Decoration, Signed and Dated "Anthony W. Bacher / 1879," Winchester, VA origin, cornucopia-form wall pocket with scalloped rim, curled tail at base, and tooled lines where tail connects to body. Surface embellished with a hand-modeled and applied decoration of a bird perched on a stem bearing leaves and flowers, each with finely incised details. Surface additionally covered in an attractive, streaked lead and manganese glaze. Reverse incised with the signature of Shenandoah Valley master potter, Anthony W. Bacher, along with the date, 1879. A fine example of Bacher's work in rare, excellent condition with only minor wear. Provenance: The Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Henry P. Deyerle, Sotheby's, 1995. Shallow chips to three crests of scalloped rim. Two small glaze flakes to cornucopia tail. Length 6 3/4".
