Rare Early Open-Handled Stoneware Jar, Stamped "COMMERAWS" and "STONEWARE / N. YORK" attributed to Thomas Commereau, Manhattan, NY, circa 1805, squat, ovoid jar with open loop handles and tooled foot, decorated on the front and back with an impressed drape and tassel motif, brushed over in cobalt. Impressed "COMMERAW.S" on one side and "STONEWARE / N. YORK" on reverse. An unusual stoneware form and desirable New York City maker. Flaking on exterior and heavy flaking on interior. Base chips and two small spout chips. H 8 7/8".
