Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt House Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, small-sized, low crock with handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt house with nine windows, a circular dormer, and door. House is situated on a hill surrounded by abstract foliage with a pine tree to its left and a split-rail fence in the foreground. Cobalt highlights to maker"s and capacity marks. A highly desirable Norton decoration, rarely found on this form. One small chip on exterior of rim and a few very small chips on interior of rim. 1" line above one handle and a 4 1/2" crack extending through handle on opposite side. H 7 1/4".
