Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Watch Spring" Decoration, attributed to Capt. James Morgan, Cheesequake, NJ, late 18th century, ovoid jar with foot, tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated front and back with a slip-trailed "watch spring". Stylized leaf or floral decoration slip-trailed under each handle. Thin band of cobalt at shoulder. Cobalt brushed at the handle terminals. A good example by this early New Jersey maker. One handle replaced. Repair to rim on one side. Numerous spider lines. Large flaked section on underside. H 12".
