Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration of a Man-in-the-Moon Wearing a Hat, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1870, decorated with the profile of a smiling man's face, girded on one side by a crescent-shaped group of leaves. Top of man's head decorated with a large-brimmed hat, reminiscent of a cowboy hat or those worn by Amish men. Maker's mark and handle terminals highlighted in cobalt. The only example we have seen of the desirable Cowden man-in-the-moon decoration with the man wearing a hat. Attractive, small-sized vessel. Possibly unique. This jug was found under the floors of a 19th century Pennsylvania summer kitchen approximately thirty years ago. This is the first time the jug has been on the market since it left the Cowden & Wilcox factory. Professionally restored handle. Base chips and rim chips. Small stone ping on reverse. Height 11".
