Phenomenal Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," circa 1845, ovoid jar with rounded collar and tab handles, decorated with an enormous slip-trailed sunflower head with chain link interior. Milburn frequently used sunflower designs to decorate his vessels. In this case, a large sunflower head is used, one so large that chain links form with flower's numerous seeds. Seven slip-trailed flowers extend outwardly from the flowerhead. Reverse decorated with two large horizontal flowers. One of the finest Milburn jars we have ever seen. Cracks at base and on underside. Base chips. Handle chip. Height 12 1/2".
