Exceedingly Rare and Important Stoneware Presentation Bank with Incised Bird and Floral Decorations, attributed to Henry H. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, mid 19th century, ovoid bank with finial ending in an applied, hand-modeled ball of clay. Bank decorated on one side with a detailed, incised bird on a flowering branch or vine, painted with cobalt. Reverse decorated with an incised floral motif, which forms a wreath around the carved slot, also painted in cobalt. The initials "E. D. L." incised in script on side of bank, highlighted in cobalt. Finial painted with cobalt. Though several examples of rare Remmey stoneware with incised bird or floral designs do exist, this is the only Remmey bank with this style of decoration that we are aware of. For a pitcher decorated with similar incised motifs, see The Art of the Potter, p. 116 and Handcraft to Industry, p. 24. Easily one of the finest examples of Remmey stoneware to surface in recent years, and likely one of the finest stoneware banks known. Near mint condition. Very minor wear to slot. Height 6".
