Rare and Important Cradle Bank with African American Infant, probably Pennsylvania, 19th century, slab-constructed cradle on rockers with a hand-modeled African-American infant inside. Baby"s mouth forms the bank"s slot. Surface is lead-glazed with manganese highlights. Highly unusual form and subject. Minor wear. Length 6 1/4". Provenance: Christie"s Sale for The Seamen"s Bank for Savings, March 13, 1991, Lot #177. Ex-Collection Bill Bertoia.
