Exceptional and Very Rare 1 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Heavy Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "J. KEISTER & CO. / STRASBURG, VA.," circa 1865, attractive, semi-ovoid form with flaring collar and drooping spout, decorated around the midsection with four large, bright cobalt flowers with leafy stems. Also decorated heavily around the collar with cobalt flowers, and at the handle terminals with cobalt circles. Superior in color and decoration to most Shenandoah Valley stoneware pitchers known. Impressed with Jeremiah Keister"s maker"s mark at the midsection, with one-gallon and half-gallon capacity marks underneath the signature, to indicate it is a 1 1/2 gallon vessel. Signed J. Keister stoneware is scarce, and pitchers produced by this potter are very unusual. Excellent condition with a few in-the-making lines at base and two insignificant rim chips by handle. Height 12".
