Very Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Incised Bird on Flowering Branch, att. Henry Remmey, Sr., Baltimore, circa 1820, ovoid pitcher with drooping spout and footed base, decorated with an elaborately incised bird grasping a leafy branch with blossom. The incised decoration covers an unusually large portion of the pitcher and Remmey"s inclusion of such features as individual feathers of the bird and veins of the leaves adds to the visual appeal of this design. Typical of some of Remmey"s work, this pitcher combines incising with freehand cobalt decoration; a brush-applied floral motif accompanies the bird on one side of the pitcher, stylized leaves surround the collar, and cobalt encircles the handle terminals. Although unsigned, the clay and cobalt color as well as the highly distinctive incised bird and freehand floral motif closely match signed examples made by Henry Remmey, Sr., in Baltimore. Remarkable, mint condition. Height 9 1/2".
