Spectacular Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Woman and Bird Decorations, att. Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1860, straight-sided form with ribbed handles, decorated on front with two scenes in cobalt: one depicting a veiled woman holding a broom or parasol, standing between two trees, the other a similarly-styled scene of a heron-like bird on a branch between two willow trees. A large "5." in cobalt above the decoration, and an additional stamped 5-gallon capacity mark. This five-gallon mark is found on other examples produced at the Thompson Pottery in Morgantown. Excellent Condition. Small chip on one handle; large chip on other handle. Faint lines on body of crock. Height 15 3/4".
