Face jugs--or, more generally, face vessels--have become one of the most beloved forms produced by period American potters. Ranging from the salt-glazed, blue-decorated examples produced in the Mid-Atlantic region and elsewhere to the alkaline-glazed pieces produced by African-American potters and others in the South, there is a wide range of different takes on this genre. Regardless of origin, face vessels are always ranked amongst the highest-quality forms produced in any given region.
