Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Iron-Oxide Decoration, Sand Mountain, AL origin, third quarter 19th century, ovoid churn with short, flaring rim and two applied, open handles at the shoulder, the surface dipped entirely in a light gray-green alkaline glaze and dipped again at the shoulder with a brown iron-oxide glaze. Embellished at the shoulder and near the base with wavy combed incising flanked by two groups of straight incised lines. Incised "5" at shoulder. Desirable form and "double-dipped" glaze treatment distinctive to the region. Some professional restoration to rim on front. A professionally-restored top-to-bottom crack from rim on front. This crack forms a wedge at the shoulder; however, a study of the interior indicates no pieces were broken out. H 18".
